Trees in the winter: days are shorter, colder, the trees are bare and seem lifeless. But if you look closer you will find they are already preparing for the next season. New leaves and flowers are hidden under protective scales, waiting for spring to come and release them. Winter is the perfect time of the year to focus on the particular structure of each tree, and to learn how to recognize the different species just by looking at their buds.
Mosses and lichens: the absence of leaves on trees allows us to fully explore the amazing multitude of shapes and colours they exhibit.
Breeding behaviour of birds: spring is the perfect time of the year to observe (and to listen to) birds’ courtship and territorial behaviour.
The sex life of flowering plants: how different pollination strategies affect a flower’s shape, colour and smell.
Hidden connections: every single being depends on a number of other organisms to survive. How species interact with each other and the environment is what ecology is all about.
Sharpen your senses: learn to notice the incredible diversity in shapes, colours, textures, smells (and tastes!) of the plants around you.
Animal traces: animal burrows, nests, feathers, droppings, pellets, feeding traces, and everything that gives away the presence of animals.
Amsterdam’s biodiversity: how its unique spatial planning affects its inhabitants. Nature is everywhere in the city centre.
